Safety, in full
We'd rather you read this before you buy than after. It covers who should check with a physician first, who shouldn't use the mask, and how to use it well.
Is the mask right for me?
Ask a physician first if you:
- are pregnant or breastfeeding
- take photosensitizing medication, such as some antibiotics, isotretinoin or St. John's Wort
- have a photosensitive condition
- have a history of skin cancer or suspicious lesions
- have an eye condition
Not sure whether a medication is photosensitizing? Your pharmacist can tell you.
Don't use the mask if you have:
- epilepsy or light triggered seizures
- an active skin infection or open wounds
Not for children under 13. Ages 13 to 18 should use it with adult supervision.
What should I do before my first session?
Do a 24-hour sensitivity test on your inner arm. Place the mask against the inside of your forearm and run one session. Wait 24 hours. If the skin shows redness, itching or irritation, don't use the mask on your face, and speak to a physician.
What's normal during a session?
Keep your eyes closed behind the built-in shields, and never look directly at the LEDs. You'll feel gentle warmth. That's normal. If your skin feels hot or uncomfortable, stop the session.
Can I use it with my skincare?
Use the mask on clean, dry skin with nothing applied, then continue your routine afterwards.
Skip your session on days you've used retinoids, AHA or BHA acids, or benzoyl peroxide. An easy way to manage it is to use your actives on the days you don't use the mask.
Wait two weeks after laser or other in-office treatments before using the mask.
Is it safe for my skin tone?
Renew, the core program of the Ritual, contains no blue light. Three programs do use blue light: Clarify, Complete, and Balance when blended with blue. On medium-to-deep skin tones, blue light may cause temporary darkening. If you notice it, stop using the blue-light programs. Because Renew has no blue light, you can build your Ritual around it.
How do I keep the mask clean?
Wipe the mask with alcohol after each use.
